Cambodia is preparing for the soft opening of the highly anticipated Techo International Airport (TIA) in July 2025, marking a significant milestone for the nation’s tourism industry. The new airport, which is expected to boost Cambodia’s tourism sector, has been under construction since 2019 and is located about 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of Phnom Penh, on the border of Kandal and Takeo provinces.
The airport, which is being developed at a cost of $1.5 billion, is a joint venture between the Cambodian government and the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corp.
The airport’s construction is being led by the China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Group Co., Ltd., while the design is provided by the British architectural firm Foster + Partners. The project is expected to serve as a key catalyst for Cambodia’s tourism recovery, which was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new infrastructure is part of a broader effort to enhance Cambodia’s tourism capacity, which has shown significant growth in recent years.
The Techo International Airport spans 2,600 hectares (6,425 acres), making it one of the largest airports in Southeast Asia.
The airport’s design features a striking single overarching roof canopy, which shelters the terminal building. The terminal is designed to be both functional and aesthetically appealing, responding to Cambodia’s tropical climate.
The building will utilize a lightweight steel grid shell and an innovative screening system that allows natural daylight into the terminal, creating a welcoming environment for travelers.
Upon completion, the airport will have the capacity to handle 13 million passengers annually.
However, the airport is designed for future expansion, with plans to increase capacity to 30 million passengers by 2030 and up to 50 million passengers by 2050. This growth is expected to accommodate the increasing influx of international travelers, as Cambodia continues to develop as a key tourist destination in Southeast Asia.
Techo International Airport will be the second major airport to open in Cambodia in the last two years, following the Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, which began operations in 2023.
The Siem Reap airport serves as a gateway to Angkor Wat, Cambodia’s iconic UNESCO World Heritage site, a major draw for international tourists.
Tourism plays a vital role in Cambodia’s economy. In 2024, Cambodia welcomed around 6.7 million international tourists, reflecting a 23% increase from the previous year. The opening of Techo International Airport is expected to further drive growth in the tourism sector, attracting more visitors to the country and creating additional economic opportunities for local businesses.
The Techo International Airport is not only a critical piece of infrastructure for Cambodia’s tourism industry but also an essential element in the country’s broader efforts to modernize its infrastructure and become a leading destination for travelers in the region. As the airport opens its doors in July 2025, it will play a significant role in positioning Cambodia as a key player in Southeast Asia’s tourism landscape.
