Millions are set to travel abroad during the festive season spanning December 20 to January 2, according to ABTA – The Travel Association. This period remains a top choice for international travel, especially for families with young children. The peak departure day is anticipated to be Sunday, December 22, while Christmas Day is expected to be the quietest.
Holidaymakers are divided between chasing winter sunshine and enjoying a classic snowy Christmas. For those seeking warmer climates, destinations like the Canary Islands, Southern Spain, Portugal, Turkey, and Dubai are at the top of the list.
On the other hand, travelers dreaming of a snowy holiday are heading to ski resorts in France, Austria, Switzerland, and Scandinavia, which promise a magical winter wonderland.
For those who prefer city breaks or festive markets, major European cities such as Amsterdam, Budapest, Dublin, Paris, Prague, and Vienna are popular choices, particularly for New Year’s celebrations.
Major airports are bracing for millions of travelers during this busy period. Heathrow is forecasting its busiest December yet, with a 21% increase in passengers on Christmas Day compared to last year, despite it being the quietest travel day of the season. Other airports are also reporting significant numbers:
Scottish airports are experiencing high traffic as well, with Edinburgh seeing its busiest days on December 20, December 27, and January 3.
Additionally, a considerable number of travelers are choosing to cross the English Channel by ferry or via the Channel Tunnel, further underscoring the appeal of holiday travel during this season.
Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive said:
“Christmas and New Year are one of the busiest times of year for overseas travel with millions heading off to spend quality time with family and friends.
“Holidaymakers are either looking for some winter sun or guaranteed snow as well as the opportunity for everyone to relax and enjoy themselves with someone else doing the hard work of cooking and clearing up after the festivities.
