The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) and Athletics Kenya (AK) have unveiled the Magical Kenya Mountain & Trail Series, a new initiative designed to establish Kenya as a leading sports and adventure destination. The series begins with the Barng’etuny Mountain Run in Nandi County, scheduled for January 18, 2025.
During the launch, KTB and Athletics Kenya solidified their partnership to jointly establish Kenya as a top destination for sports tourism. This alliance highlights their mutual dedication to expanding the country’s tourism portfolio.
Speaking during the launch event in Nairobi, PS for Tourism John Ololtua said that Kenya known as the home of running and world beaters has the potential to attract additional tourists by tapping in the mountain and trail series which also gives opportunity for youth to exploit their talent as well as promote the local economies where the trail takes place.
The Magical Kenya Mountain & Trail Series will showcase six thrilling events set against Kenya’s stunning landscapes. These include the Barng’etuny Mountain Run, the Nyamira Great Run Edition in May, the Mt. Kenya Mountain Run in June, the Aberdare’s Trail Run in August, the Mt. Longonot Edition in November and the Mt. Elgon Run in December.
KTB CEO June Chepkemei emphasized the strategic importance of the series, describing it as a transformative initiative for Kenya’s tourism sector. She highlighted its potential to attract both international sports enthusiasts and domestic tourists, further tapping into the growing sports tourism market.

The launch brought together hikers, trail and mountain runners, and key stakeholders from the tourism industry, all of whom aim to amplify the attractions surrounding these trail events. The series is a core component of the Kenya Adventure Tourism Club initiative, which unites public and private sector organizations, adventure experience providers, experts, and suppliers across Kenya’s nine tourism circuits. This initiative seeks to position Kenya as a world-class destination for adventure and outdoor enthusiasts.
